How and why does Pigment occur?
There are several variables that can cause pigmentation. Pigmentation occurs on the skin where there is an abnormal amount of melanin being produced. This over production of melanin can be fuelled by sun exposure, inflammation, genetics, acne, hormonal changes, photo sensitising mediciations and chemicals such as perfumes and fragrances.
How does The cosmelan Peel work and what is involved?
Cosmelan fades the appearance of existing and stubborn pigmentation whilst preventing the formation of future pigment production.
The Cosmelan treatment works by decreasing the skin’s melanin production by inhibition of the enzyme tyrosinase.
The Cosmelan peel uses a cocktail of corrective ingredients to unify your skin tone for the greater good. Such ingredients include Kojic acid, Octadecenedioic acid, Vitamin C, Tyronsinol complex, Niacinamide, Salicylic acid, Nonapeptide 1, Liquorice extract, Aloe vera extract. Thanks to this concoction of amazing ingredients, the Cosmelan peel is proven to be the most common treatment for balancing skin tone. The de-pigmenting mask targets the enzymes that allow your body to produce melanin. This allows for fading of pigmentation to occur, evening out your skin tone.
There are two phases to the Cosmelan, the application of the mask and then the after homecare.
Step 1 – An intense depigmentation mask is applied in the salon and left on for 8-12 hours and removed at home. The mask application takes 20 -30 minutes.
Step 2 – Continious depigmentaion is required with a depigmentation routine to continue to enhance the results of the corrective mask. In this phase, expect moderate to heavy peeling and flaking for 5-10 days. You may feel stinging, experience some swelling, redness, sensitivity, and will feel like a mild to moderate sunburn.
An LED Healite is performed 72 hours later. LED works by increasing the immune response which helps clear dead cells and repairs damaged ones, helps stimulate collagen production and circulation.
Step 3 – For 2 -3 months post treatment a daily routine has to be applied to regulate the overproduction of pigment. The at home maintenance products are just as important as it’s a two phase treatment
What happens after my treatment?
There is usually up to 10-12 days of flaking skin, mild redness that resembles sunburn and mild stinging can be present when using the homecare as the skin adjusts. This is all very normal. The skin will start to shed and within a week to two weeks, the skin starts to look very fresh, revived, luminous and smooth. The skin will continue to flake and shed as the pigment is continually being lifted. It is imperative that you stick to the homecare given in the pack prescribed for you in order for the treatment to continue to work and to prevent the pigment from returning.

The better your skin is prepped, the better the outcome so we will most likely recommend some lactic peels prior to commencing the Cosmelan Treatment. Strong, healthy skin will always have a better outcome of results.
It is recommended that 6 weeks after the treatment an Energy C facial is performed to further enhance results of the treatment.
